Tyre Pressure and Rotation: The Free Maintenance Most People Ignore

Two of the most valuable things you can do for your car cost almost nothing: keep your tyres at the right pressure, and rotate them regularly. Most drivers do neither, and pay for it in fuel, grip and replacement tyres.

Why pressure matters more than you'd think. Tyres lose pressure naturally over time, and faster in the heat. Run them under-inflated and you get the lot: more fuel burned, because soft tyres create more rolling resistance; faster, uneven wear that chews through the edges of the tyre; worse handling and longer stopping distances, because less of the tyre is making proper contact with the road; and a higher blowout risk, especially on a hot Western Sydney motorway run. The correct pressure is on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb or in the fuel flap — not the number printed on the tyre itself, which is the maximum, not the recommendation. Check pressures when the tyres are cold for an accurate reading.

Why rotation nearly doubles tyre life. Your tyres don't wear evenly. The fronts usually wear faster because they handle the steering, most of the braking, and on front-wheel-drive cars the power as well. Leave them in the same spot forever and you'll end up with bald fronts while the rears still have plenty of tread left. Rotating them — swapping front to back on a schedule — spreads that wear so all four wear evenly. Done roughly every 10,000 km, it can genuinely come close to doubling how long a set lasts. That's a real saving for a five-minute job.

The easiest wins in car maintenance, then: check pressures monthly and before long trips, use the door-jamb figure with cold tyres, rotate every 10,000 km or so, and keep an eye on the tread — if it's near the wear bars, start planning replacements.
