Regular Oil Changes: The One Job That Actually Protects Your Engine

If you only ever do one thing for your car, make it this: change the oil on time. It's cheap, it's quick, and it's the single biggest factor in whether your engine lasts 150,000 km or 350,000 km.

Engine oil isn't just lubrication — it's doing four jobs at once. It lubricates the metal parts moving against each other thousands of times a minute. It cools by carrying heat away from the hot spots. It cleans by picking up carbon, metal particles and gunk and holding them in suspension. And it seals the tiny gaps between the pistons and the cylinder walls. Fresh oil does all four jobs well. Old oil does none of them well.

Over time and heat, oil breaks down. It turns thick, dirty and acidic. It stops flowing properly on cold starts — which is exactly when most engine wear happens. The detergents that keep everything clean get used up, and sludge starts forming inside the engine. Run it long enough and you get accelerated wear, overheating and eventually serious internal damage. By the time the oil light comes on or the engine starts knocking, the damage is often already done.

How often should you change it? Follow your logbook, but lean conservative:

  • Conventional oil: every ~5,000 km or 6 months
  • Synthetic oil: every ~10,000–15,000 km or 12 months

Whichever comes first. And if you do a lot of short trips and stop-start traffic — which describes most driving around Western Sydney — change it more often, not less. Short trips are actually harder on oil than long highway runs, because the engine never fully heats up to burn off the moisture that collects inside it.

The maths here never changes: an oil and filter change is one of the cheapest jobs on a car, and a new engine is one of the most expensive. Stay on top of it and you'll likely never have to think about your engine at all.
